More About the Compassion Clinic of Williams County
After many years in Bryan as a pastor and being frustrated over the lack of affordable health care to the uninsured and working poor, Pastor Mike Kelly attended the Mennonite Church USA Bi-Annual Convention in Charlotte NC which “just happened” to focus on access to health care for the uninsured. When he returned to his church office, he found a brochure sitting on his desk about The Ohio Association Of Free Clinics. He attended a seminar they sponsored on “How to Begin A Free Clinic” in Columbus in October 2005.
He returned from Columbus with the knowledge that he could actually start a free clinic. He immediately met with Troy Simon, the CEO of the then Bryan Medical Group (now, Parkview Physicians Group). Upon meeting with Mr. Simon and being encouraged to meet the doctors to share his vision with them the next Monday, he heard from them their desire to participate in the free clinic and signed up a dozen doctors willing to help.
From the encouragement of that meeting, he formed a board of working professionals the next week including a medical doctor, a nurse practitioner, an RN, a pharmacist, an attorney, an experienced builder, a prayer warrior, a couple of people familiar with the clerical working of a clinic, and a lab technician.
Diane Ullom, the lab technician was asked to be the Director of the Clinic and her husband, Dan, an RN was asked to assist her.
From that meeting eventually came the Compassion Medical Clinic of Northwest Ohio, Inc.
We opened in May 2007 at 614 E. Edgerton St.in Bryan with over 4,000 sq. ft. of space including 6 exam rooms, 2 nurse’s stations, a pharmacy, counseling rooms and a volunteer staff of over100.
In July 2020, the building experience and electrical fire and burned to the ground. 2 Weeks later we reopened in space donated by the First Church of Christ in Bryan.
Several months later, the Church offered the Clinic a permanent space in their building and after months of work and $60,000 of investment, we re-opened the new clinic in Nov. 2021. While the new space is considerable smaller, it comes with a number of perks including a location in downtown Bryan just a block off the square. We are truly grateful to God and the First Church for their incredible generosity.
